Frequently Asked Questions about Spiritual Direction

Do I need to have a particular faith or

understanding of God to work with you?

No. You are welcome to come exactly as you are. Whether you are questioning, deconstructing, rebuilding, growing in your faith or simply unsure what you believe, there is room here for honest questions and curiosity without judgment or pressure. Together we will make space to listen for what is true, meaningful and life-giving for you.

How long is a spiritual direction session?

Our sessions are usually one hour long. However, if you would like a longer guided mini-retreat or session, I'm happy to accommodate that.

Where do spiritual direction sessions take place?

Sessions take place via Zoom. For those who live on Vancouver Island. sessions are available in person or via Zoom.

How do I get started with spiritual direction?

Getting started is simple. The first step is for you to reach out to Anita via email. I will respond within 48 hours to set up an initial, free conversation so we can get to know one another, talk about what you’re looking for and explore whether this feels like a good fit. It's an opportunity to ask any questions and chat about what to expect, including possible next steps together. There's no pressure or expectation for a commitment at that time.

Is spiritual direction the same as counseling

or therapy?

No. While some questions may be similar and healing happens in both, counseling primarily focuses on addressing issues of mental and emotional health. Spiritual direction focuses on creating space to listen, notice the presence of the Divine, and discern what is unfolding within and around us in all of life.

How do I know if spiritual direction is right for me?

Spiritual direction may be a good fit if you’re longing for a deeper connection with God, navigating a season of change or uncertainty, carrying questions about life and faith or simply wanting space to slow down and listen more deeply. You don’t need to be in crisis or have a specific concern; simply sensing a desire for support or something deeper is enough.

What can I bring to a spiritual direction session?

Feel free to bring whatever is present in your life. This includes questions, struggles, relationships, transitions, joys, grief, doubts, hopes, or simply a whatever is stirring within you.

Can spiritual direction help if I’ve experienced spiritual or religious harm?

Absolutely! Spiritual trauma or hurt is an area of specialized training and experience for me.  This is a safe space for you to share, explore and heal.
